Test Driven Research

Test driven research allows for a more inductive approach. One can begin with a few, very specific, concrete instances and then expand on them to extrapolate those higher level principles that hold up under stress. In an art as complex as Tai Chi, it can be difficult to start with a generalized approach and move directly to a functional, consistently performing set of applications.

Starting with an already optimized technique and running through a battery of tests provides and opportunity to begin to understand the absolute genius behind the art. Some examples of the evaluation criteria we routinely run through include:

  • Value in a linear context
  • Value in a rotational context
  • Demonstrated value against varying degrees of resistance
  • Demonstrated value against a completely stiff or unyielding opponent
  • Analysis of sensory telegraphing
  • Impact to balance
  • Ability to continue or restart the movement
